The Mint

The Mint opened in 1957 and closed in 1988, after 31 years, downtown near Fremont Street, with up to 300 rooms. On the site today: Part of Binion's.

The story

The Mint opened downtown on 12 July 1957, owned by Milton Prell and partners, with Sam Boyd as its first general manager. Del Webb Corporation bought it in 1961 and added a 26-floor tower, topped out on 20 March 1965 and then among the tallest buildings in Nevada. Patsy Cline played its Merri-Mint Theatre in late 1962, three months before she died. The Mint sponsored the Mint 400 off-road race and was the first night's stop in Hunter S. Thompson's Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas. Its casino appears in the films Viva Las Vegas (1964) and Diamonds Are Forever (1971). In 1988 it was sold and became part of Binion's Horseshoe, and its tower has been sealed off since.
