New Frontier

New Frontier opened in 1942 and closed in 2007, after 65 years, on the Las Vegas Strip, with up to 984 rooms. On the site today: Empty lot opposite Treasure Island.

The story

R.E. Griffith opened the western-themed Hotel Last Frontier on 30 October 1942, the second resort on the Strip, and Liberace made his Las Vegas debut there in 1944, followed by Elvis Presley in 1956. The old buildings gave way to the Frontier, which opened on 29 July 1967 with a young Steve Wynn among its investors, and Howard Hughes bought it at the end of that year. Under the Elardi family, workers began a strike in 1991 that lasted until Phil Ruffin bought the hotel and renamed it the New Frontier on 1 February 1998. It closed on 16 July 2007, its tower was imploded on 13 November 2007, and every later resort plan for the site was shelved.
