Klondike
Klondike opened in 1962 and closed in 2006, after 44 years, on the Las Vegas Strip, with up to 153 rooms. On the site today: A Harley-Davidson dealership (since 2014).
The story
The property began in 1962 as the Kona Kai Motel, which Ralph Engelstad bought in 1969. John Woodrum took over in 1976 and renamed it the Klondike Inn, and it won a gaming licence in 1982. With 153 rooms and a western theme, it was the southernmost hotel on the Strip, near the Welcome to Fabulous Las Vegas sign. Locals made up about 90 percent of its customers, drawn by cheap food and gambling, and it appears in the 1997 film Vegas Vacation. Royal Palm bought it in 2005 for a planned resort. The casino closed on 28 June 2006, demolition ended on 20 March 2008, and a Harley-Davidson dealership opened on the land in October 2014.
