Boardwalk

Boardwalk opened in 1966 and closed in 2006, after 40 years, on the Las Vegas Strip, with up to 653 rooms. On the site today: Waldorf Astoria Las Vegas, part of CityCenter.

The story

The Boardwalk began in 1966 as a Holiday Inn. Norbert Jansen opened a gift shop there in 1972 and later the Slot Joynt casino, and in 1989 he merged them into the Boardwalk Hotel and Casino. A Coney Island theme arrived in the mid-1990s, with a carnival front of mock rides and a giant clown face, followed by a 15-floor tower in 1996. It was popular for cheap food and rooms and for its small size next to the megaresorts. Mirage Resorts bought it in 1998, and it closed on 9 January 2006 to make way for CityCenter. The main tower was imploded on 9 May 2006, and CityCenter's Waldorf Astoria hotel now stands there.
