What happened to The Mirage

The Mirage closed on 17 July 2024. It is being rebuilt as Hard Rock Las Vegas, with a guitar-shaped hotel tower.

The story

Steve Wynn's Golden Nugget company built the Mirage, partly on the site of the Castaways. It opened on 22 November 1989 at a cost of $630 million, then the world's most expensive resort, and as the first megaresort on the Strip it set off a building boom. It had dolphin and tiger habitats, an indoor tropical forest and a volcano that erupted every night out front. Siegfried & Roy performed there for nearly 14 years from 1990, and the Cirque du Soleil Beatles show Love ran from 2006 to 2024. Hard Rock took over in 2022, and the Mirage closed on 17 July 2024 to be rebuilt as Hard Rock Las Vegas, with a guitar-shaped tower where the volcano stood.
